A STAKEHOLDERS’ meeting on the rehabilitation of strategic roads in Epe Local Government Area, was last week convened to address all grey areas preparatory to the flag-off of massive roads expansion and rehabilitation by the Lagos State Government in the council area.
Tagged: “Stakeholders Meeting on the Rehabilitation of Strategic/Arterial/Inner Roads in Epe Local government”, the forum was attended by the traditional rulers, women groups, youths, property owners, businessmen and legislators representing the area in both the state and national assemblies.
Welcoming the stakeholders, the Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ganiyu Johnson, an engineer, listed the roads to be either constructed or rehabilitated as: Lagos Road, Oke Osho/T Junction, Aiyetoro/ Roundabout; Central Mosque Junction/Orita Marun Stream, all categorised as ‘Grade A’. Others are Oloja Estate; Bature/ Otunba Adeniyi/Omotayo/Uthman Mustapha and Raman/Ishawu Owolabi, which are in category ‘B’.
The contractor, Messrs Granebury Construction is expected to mobilise to site any moment from now, to begin the first phase of the project.
Johnson explained that the meeting became necessary in view of the fact that some properties that fell on the Right of ways (ROAs) would need to go. He stated that as a responsible government, “we want to carry you along in the execution of this noble project’.
The commissioner who noted that there can be no gain without some level of pain and discomfort, said the project would affect some existing structures in a bid to achieve the desired right-of -way.
“We therefore solicit for the understanding and cooperation of all residents, especially, those whose properties will be affected. We realise that this temporary inconvenience will soon give way to all the conceivable comfort that the project, when completed, will bring to the entire communities”, Johnson remarked. According to him, proper enumeration would be made to ensure that the affected people receive commensurate compensation.
The traditional ruler of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun who spoke at the forum, observed that Epe Division had suffered neglect for long.
“However, we thank God and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for this opportunity. We will support the project because Epe is now faced with unimaginable developmental projects.
“We have Lagos Free Trade Zone, the proposed airport, fertilizer plant by Dangote Groups and others like that. At the end of the day, it is Epe that would benefit most”, the royal father declared.
A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Biodun Tobun advised the government to ensure that the payment of compensation would not be subjected to bureaucratic bottlenecks. He implored the contractor to patronise local building materials, as well as engage the youths and artisans in the execution of the project.
The Managing Director, SEGSON Nigeria Limited, Pastor Segun Ogunade called on both the government and contractor to give the execution of the projects a human face. Ogunade urged the youths not to see the project as means of exploitation, but rather, a project that would be beneficial to all and sundry.
Oba of Noforija, Babatunde Ogunlaja assured the contractor that his workers would not suffer any form of molestation in the course of executing the project.
Successful completion
“We don’t want the Governor to regret coming with this laudable project. Let us all join hands to ensure its successful completion”, he pleaded.
From women group came the plea for immediate rehabilitation of some portions of the Epe-Temu, Imota Agbowa and Isiu roads where craters and potholes have become a common feature.
Mrs. Khadijat Ibiyemi, one of the women leaders said there is need to address the road leading from the town to IKorodu.
“We are traders going to Mile 12 daily to purchase our goods, but the condition of the road is scarry. On several occasions, trucks, in the process of trying to avoid potholes would face un-coming vehicles, which is very dangerous. We plead with government to, as matter of urgency, patch the affected spots,” she pleaded.
