Birds Flu Disease Kills Hundreds In Adamawa

A  suspected disease known to be Avian Influenza is reported to have killed hundreds birds inToungo Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Reports have it that the disease in the past one week or there after has already wiped out some poultry farms in the area and has put fear in the minds of some poultry farmers.
It could be recalled that in 2009 the disease was first recorded  in Lavundu village in Girei local government area of the state where many birds were killed as well as human lives lost.
  Alhaji Isa Salihu, the State  Commissioner for Livestock when contacted on Monday confirmed that there was suspected Bird Flu case in the State  and that efforts are being made to ensure that the Ministry tackle the situation before it gets to a larger dimensions.
Salihu told Newsmen in Yola that the disease was reported at one poultry farm in Toungo Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Commissioner a combined team of veterinary doctors and nurses were despatched to the area to curtail and latter reported back to the Ministry for more action to be followed.
  Alhaji Salihu further explained that “the Ministry last week received a report from a Poultry farm belonging to one Alhaji Yusuf Toungo  that a huge number of birds in the farm are  dying.
  “The sample of the death birds from the poultry was taken to the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom in Plateau state for further investigation”, the Commissioner added.
He said that the state government had already taken quarantine measures including surveillance in the affected areas to contain the disease.
  Salihu appealed to the people of the area not to panic but report any suspicious disease to the nearest Local Government Divisional Veterinary Officer for prompt action
