Empowering the Youths of Nigeria

Despite the breakdown of moral values and lack of mentorship in the polity, there are still few people who are doing everything within their capacity to mentor young ones to become useful and successful in the society.

One of such is an unassuming but intelligent entrepreneur, Uche Ahubelem, MD/CEO Brickwall Group of Companies.

Recently at the Oriental Hotels, Ahubelem empowered three budding youths through his Uche Ahubelem Centre for Human Development (UACHD).

Gerald Nnasor, who is an expert on advert on two wheels, smiled home with N700,000; Michael Balogun, who specialises in packaging tourism, received the sum of N600,000 and Precious Ewomazino Uno, who runs native kitchen, got N500,000.

With the theme-‘Attack Young’, it was gathered that 300 youths registered online out of which 200 were screened and 15 did presentations.

In his remarks, Ahubelem explained why he organised the event. He said: “Lots of young people are going wayward and there is need to harness their potentials for their benefit and that of the nation. I have a vision of impacting not only Africa but beyond. I am not only into charity but capacity building. As successful as the United States is, there are also delinquents there.

“I am really excited about empowering younger ones. I believe you make an impact not only by making money alone but by making others self-sufficient. If I cannot reach everybody, then one of the most important things I can impact on them is knowledge. One thing I know I would gain by doing what I am doing is that I would leave my footprints on the sands of time. I don’t want to be a politician but a statesman. I’m thinking about the future of this country.

“The reason I started this programme is that there comes a time in your life when you begin to realise that the important people that would ever make value in your life may not necessarily be your tribe’s people, you can get help anywhere. I am a detribalised person because I know that we are all born from a tribe because ordinarily, we should all come from a tribe but God did not create us to segregate among ourselves. I am expecting to see men that will fly out today.

“There are people that if you don’t talk to them, they will end up as nobody. I am seeing people here that will be the next generation.”

Other interesting features of the event, aside Ahubelem’s inspirational speech, was that two people in the audience got N50,000 each for answering questions, while, other participants were given Consat decoders.

The first empowerment programme took place at Eko Hotels on April 4, 2015 and that event had the theme: ‘Life Proven Secrets of Success’. Three people who won the contest took home N300,000; N200,000 and N100,000, respectively.
