Nigeria: Tunga Nasara Residents Want Govt to Commission Health Centre

The residents of Tunga Nasara, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abuja have appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, to commission the completed primary healthcare centre in the community.

Some of the residents said the centre, completed about four months ago has not been put to use, with weeds already growing around the centre.

The secretary to the community's chief, Nasiru Fayabawa, said the area council authorities when consulted said the centre's commissioning was delayed by the absence of a substantive minister in the FCT.

He lamented that about two months after a minister was appointed, however the healthcare centre is yet to be commissioned.

Fayabawa expressed concern that if the centre is not quickly commissioned, the equipment already in it could be affected.

He said it is disheartening that despite the presence of the healthcare centre, residents still take their sick ones to Zuba or Suleja for treatment.

He said on such trips, residents spend money on transport and exorbitant charges at private hospitals.

He explained that expectant mothers are most affected, as they have to bear labour pains on the long trip to hospitals outside the community.

"I took a woman to the hospital but before we got to the junction, she died," he said, while explaining an incident that happened two years ago.

With the construction of the healthcare centre, he said the community had hoped that such deaths would be stopped, adding the situation will remain the same if the centre is not commissioned and opened for use.

Another resident, Hussein Eremiah said the centre, when commissioned would also benefit neighbouring communities including Tunga Ashere where he said residents go through greater ordeal due to lack of a healthcare centre.

Eremiah appealed to government to come to the aid of the residents by opening and deploying capable hands to the healthcare centre to offer relief to the residents in seeking health care.
