Nigerian Soldiers Accused of Killing Suspects in Adamawa

Soldiers during the week arrested a teacher, Habu Bello, and two other men, Idrisa Dele and Umaru Hammankadi, on suspicion that they were Boko Haram fighters.

However, some hours later, the men were found dead, their bodies dumped by the roadside with bullet wounds, according to reports.

Villagers in Duhu, Adamawa State, where the incident took place, had accused the military of killing the suspects.

The Associated Press reported on Friday that the villagers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that army officers killed the detainees, adding that some women had protested after the incident.

Their account came amid accusations that many other people arrested by the military and vigilantes on suspicion of being Boko Haram fighters have disappeared and feared dead. A human rights group, the Amnesty International, had in recent times accused the Nigerian Army of killing thousands of civilians in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency. The military, however, denied the allegation.
