President Muhammadu Buhari |
Ezeemo who is the owner of Orient Farm in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of the state said Agriculture remains the solution to youth unemployment in the country.
He described youth unemployment in the country as catastrophic, calling for more serious commitment in the agro-allied industry.
He added that the number of applications he received from unemployed youths in his office daily calls for concern.
He said, “Agriculture in my view is the only sector that would provide large job opportunities to the youth.
“ Instead of the youth wasting their productive years, looking for white collar jobs, government at all levels should see agriculture as a core means of livelihood and place more emphasis on it.
Ezeemo said if agriculture was given the priority it deserved by successive governments, the country would not be feeling the current crash in oil prices.
He maintained that by-products of agriculture alone have the capacity to sustained the economy of the country more than oil.
“Agriculture is the last blood of any nation, its potentials are enormous. The problem is that we left agriculture and focused on oil, but our mistake can be remedied if we reverse now and do the rightful.
“Before the war, there were groundnut pyramid, cotton field and palm oil that we exported, but because oil was discovered, agriculture was abandoned and that brought this unemployment.
“Oil gave us raw cash which we did not use very well. If we had invested on agriculture, by now Nigeria would have been one of the best economy in the world.” the PPA chieftain said.
